My journey and exploration of acrylics as a painting medium is inspired by playing or listening to classical music in which I was trained. Painting has become my space of delight and wonder.

In addition to music’s inspiration, it has also deeply influenced my artistic approach. I see parallels between sound and the visual - the rhythm of brushstrokes, the layering of hues, the pauses in the composition - all these mirror musical phrasing, melody, and harmony

I am drawn to the versatility of texture and hue that acrylics offer. Using this medium I explore  non representational forms that express my love of colour and connection to the natural world here in the Pacific Northwest - trees, botanicals, forest undergrowth and the complex interplay of light and shadow.

When I paint, I  begin with a geometric grid that forms the foundation of my composition. Next I choose the subject or colour harmony. Starting with limited colours I place strokes of paint mixed in small batches, beside each other.  It is exciting to explore subtle or dramatic colour relationships: some edges are sharp, some melt into each  other.  Using the grid,  I allow the colours to transform the structure into something alive and cohesive.

My influences range from artists such as Paul Klee, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh to more contemporary artists like Joan Mitchell, Damien Hirst, Larry Poons.

When viewing my paintings I hope that as a viewer , you will feel  a sense of connection and wonder, experience little breathless moments of joy and a glimpse into the exquisite beauty in everyday life.

“One should hear a little music, read a little poetry and see a fine painting every day of their life in order that worldly care may not obliterate the sense of beautiful which is implanted in the human soul.”           ~ Goethe
